Champagne Krug
Vintage 2008
Krug Vintage Champagne represents today the two-dimensional expression of Krug: three grapes from a single vintage of rare excellence. Not a better or worse Krug, but different, balanced and complete similar to its predecessors. This Champagne is the perfect and irrevocable interpretation that Krug gives of an excellent and unrepeatable vintage and also reveals a unique personality that will then be made concrete through the marketing of a rare and unique product.
The result is a Champagne capable of harmonizing the specific character of a single vintage with the intense style inspired by the Maison Krug.
Krug Vintage 2008 represents the elegance and intensity of a fresh and balanced vintage, nicknamed “Classic Beauty” by the Maison Krug.
Thanks to the excellent weather in 2008, which was balanced and cool, the grapes were given plenty of time to ripen in peace, offering wonderful freshness at harvest time. With such a mild and stable climate, it is surprising to observe the great heterogeneity of the different vineyards. The beauty of this contrast is the source of inspiration that leads to the blending of complementary flavours and aromas from different vineyards, including Aÿ, Bouzy and Ambonnay
The 2008 vintage was the coolest in the Champagne region in 14 years and one of the least sunny in the region in almost fifty years. It was a superb vintage with a classic northern climate, with conditions that have occurred only rarely since: rainfall was the norm, the summer was dry and temperatures remained constant throughout the growing season. The absence of extreme conditions led to slow and regular ripening of the bunches.
These circumstances produced intense, elegant and wonderfully structured grapes. The amazing heterogeneity of the vines created great complexity, resulting in a decidedly complete range of flavours and aromas when harvested. For the final blend, Maison Krug’s Chef de Caves selected wines that best represented the flavours, aromas and complexity of the year. It was brought to life with a composition marked by the beauty, complexity and elegance of 2008.
For the final creation, wines were selected from vineyards that best represented the extraordinary characteristics of 2008. Pinot Noir (53%) represents more than half of the blend and comes mainly from the emblematic vineyards of the Montagne de Reims Sud, including Aÿ, Mareuil, Bouzy and Ambonnay. Meunier (25%) lends tension and citrus notes, while the Chardonnay (22%) enriches the blend with a fruity aroma. The marvellous, precise and harmonious profile of Krug Vintage 2008 is the result of more than 12 years in the Maison’s cellars, during which it has developed expressiveness, harmony and refinement.
Krug Vintage 2008 presents itself to the eye with an intense, brilliant golden hue. On the nose, it is expressive, rich and broad with patinated aromas of honey, liquorice, menthol, orange peel and grapefruit. It is lively, intense and harmonious, with great tension on the palate, and displays expressive notes of quince, candied fruit and citrus, yellow kiwi, starfruit, honey, apple pie, butter biscuits, orange peel, peony and fennel, with floral and menthol undertones. The finish is persistent, balanced and precise with a surprising structure.
